Here's a quick rundown: Dr. M. Sujith, a medical student, asked to retake an exam he failed. The court turned down his request because he had already used up all the time allowed to finish his course.
Dr. M. Sujith went to the High Court of Madras. He challenged a decision from Pondicherry University that refused to let him retake an exam for his MD in General Medicine. This decision was made on September 15, 2023. Dr. Sujith was supposed to take the exam on December 12, 2023, at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Sujith started his post-graduate medical education in the 2017-18 school year. He got in through the NEET exam and attended group counseling sessions organized by CENTAC in Puducherry. After a final counseling session on May 29, 2017, he got a seat.
Dr. Sujith faced several problems. His name wasn't on the list sent by CENTAC, leading to a notice on July 24, 2017, that questioned his admission. Despite this, he was allowed to take exams in December 2021, June 2022, and July 2023. Unfortunately, he didn't pass one subject.
"The petitioner had secured 198/200 in theory papers and as such was declared failed in one subject."
Dr. Sujith asked for extra points for his last exam attempt in July 2023. However, Pondicherry University's rules didn't allow for extra points or more chances beyond six years.
The court, led by Justice Vivek Kumar Singh, rejected the petition on December 20, 2024. The court noted that Dr. Sujith had already used the maximum time allowed to finish his course.
The court's decision means Dr. Sujith cannot retake the exam.
