Summary: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has allowed a life convict to attend to his wife's serious illness without a police escort, changing an earlier decision.
On December 17, 2025, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, with Judges G.K. Ilanthiraiyan and R. Poornima in charge, looked at a request made by J. Mohamed Haris. He asked for emergency leave for his father, Jahaber Sathick, who is serving a life sentence in Central Prison, Trichy. The request was to let him visit his wife, Jasmin Farvin, who is very sick with severe asthma.
Jahaber Sathick was found guilty by the III Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District, on March 25, 2021. He was convicted under Sections 457, 380, and 302 read with 34 of the IPC and got a life sentence. His appeal was turned down by the court on December 13, 2023.
Mohamed Haris, the son, asked for a six-day emergency leave for his father without needing a police escort. The family, having limited money, couldn't pay for the escort. The initial approval required an escort, which was too expensive for the family.
"The petitioner is being a poor family, he could not afford cost for the escorts."
On November 20, 2025, the original order required a police escort for the leave. However, the court changed this on December 17, 2025. The judges agreed to remove the escort requirement, allowing Sathick to visit his sick wife without police supervision. He must, however, check in daily at the Thiruvidaimaruthur Police Station at 5:30 p.m. and follow other rules set by the prison authorities.
The court decided to allow Jahaber Sathick to visit his wife without a police escort, given the family's financial difficulties. He must still report to the local police station daily and follow other conditions.
