Summary: Viswanath Karbhari Shipankar, accused of being involved in the movement of a large amount of alprazolam, was denied bail by the Telangana High Court. Judge K. Sujana highlighted the seriousness of the accusations and Viswanath's criminal history.
On May 15, 2025, police in Zaheerabad Town, Sangareddy District, caught Viswanath and another person with alprazolam. Viswanath was identified as the supplier and was caught entering a vehicle. The police seized 770 grams of alprazolam and Rs. 7,50,000 from the scene. The case was registered under Crime No. 147 of 2025 for breaking several sections of the NDPS Act.
Viswanath's lawyer argued that he was wrongly accused and pointed out that other people in similar cases had been given bail. The lawyer also claimed there was no solid proof linking Viswanath to the drug trade, such as phone records or evidence of planning.
"There is no strong evidence to prove that the drugs found with the petitioner are alprazolam," argued the defense.
The government's lawyer opposed the bail, highlighting Viswanath's involvement in similar cases in Maharashtra. They stressed that the amount of alprazolam was large and releasing him could lead to repeated crimes.
"The petitioner has a history of involvement in at least two other criminal cases," the prosecutor noted.
Judge K. Sujana, after reviewing the arguments and evidence, denied the bail. The judge noted the serious nature of the crime and Viswanath's past record, which suggested he might continue illegal activities if released.
"Protecting the investigation and ensuring fairness in the legal process take priority over granting bail," stated Judge Sujana.
Viswanath remains in custody as the case moves forward, due to the serious nature of the charges and his past criminal behavior.
