Quick Summary: On February 6, 2026, the Supreme Court of India made an important update to the Advisory Committee for transgender rights. Ms. Aparna Mehrotra from the Centre for Law and Policy Research is now a member, joining Ms. Nithya Rajshekhar, who will continue her role.

Background of the Case

This case started with a request filed by Jane Kaushik against the Union of India. The request led to the creation of an Advisory Committee to focus on transgender rights, as per the court's order dated October 17, 2025.

Why the Change?

The court pointed out that Ms. Nithya Rajshekhar, who was initially chosen for the committee, is no longer working with the Centre for Law and Policy Research. However, because of her extensive work in transgender rights, she will remain on the committee.

"We clarify that she would continue as one of the members of the Advisory Committee," said Justice J.B. Pardiwala.

New Appointment

The court decided to add another member to the committee to make sure it runs smoothly. Ms. Aparna Mehrotra, a Senior Associate at the Centre for Law and Policy Research, has been appointed to represent the Centre and its work in transgender rights.

The Court's Decision

The decision was given by Mr. Justice J.B. Pardiwala, with Mr. Justice R. Mahadevan also on the panel. The decision was made in New Delhi and was recorded in Miscellaneous Application No. 196 of 2026.

"With the aforesaid directions, this Miscellaneous Application stands disposed of accordingly," concluded the judges.

This update ensures that the Advisory Committee continues to have strong representation and expertise in advocating for transgender rights in India.
