In a recent case, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court decided to take a closer look at some harsh comments made against police officers in a Nagercoil criminal case. Here's what happened.
Back in September 2020, there was an incident near a canal-bridge in Keelamaravankudieruppu. The accused allegedly attacked a person with a bill hook, stole some money, and threatened them. The police quickly got involved and filed a report.
The trial court ended up letting the accused go free because the evidence didn't match up. However, the court also made some strong comments against the police officers involved in the investigation, especially targeting D. Santhakumari, who was in charge for a short period.
The court suggested that the government shouldn't trust Santhakumari with future investigations.
D. Santhakumari, the officer in question, was only in charge for four days. She argued that the final report was filed by another officer, and she didn't even get a chance to explain her side before the court made its comments.
The High Court, led by Justice L. Victoria Gowri, decided that the trial court needed to think again about its comments. The officers should have been given a chance to explain themselves before any negative comments were made.
The High Court ordered that the trial court should invite both officers to explain their actions. This way, if any comments are necessary, they will be fair and based on a complete understanding of the situation.
