Two men were sentenced to life in prison after a land dispute in Kallakurichi turned deadly. The court found them guilty of murder and other charges.

The Incident: A Fatal Quarrel

On May 23, 2017, around 4:30 PM, a dispute over a compound wall in Porasakkurichi, Kallakuruchi Taluk, escalated. Sivagami, the wife of the victim Anbazhagan, confronted Murugan and Veeramuthu about building on disputed land. The argument turned violent when Anbazhagan was attacked with an iron rod and cement block, leading to his death.

"The first accused hit Anbazhagan with an iron rod on his head," the court documents stated.

The Legal Battle: From Acquittal to Conviction

Initially, the first judge in Kallakurichi found the accused not guilty on November 13, 2017, due to not having enough evidence. However, Sivagami challenged the decision. On February 18, 2026, Justices P. Velmurugan and M. Jothiraman changed the decision, finding the accused guilty based on what witnesses said and medical evidence.

Witnesses and Evidence

The prosecution brought in 19 witnesses, including family members and neighbors, who described the attack. Medical reports confirmed the injuries matched the attack described.

"The deceased died of shock and blood loss due to head injuries," the post-mortem report confirmed.

Sentencing and Next Steps

On February 26, 2026, the court sentenced both men to life imprisonment. The sentence is temporarily paused to allow for an appeal to the Supreme Court.

"The sentence of imprisonment is paused until the appeal period is over," the judgment noted.

This case shows the serious outcomes of violent disputes and how the justice system deals with such tragedies.
