Quick Summary: On December 16, 2025, the Madras High Court told the authorities to rethink the payment for landowners in Kancheepuram, following a decision by the Supreme Court.
Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar went to the Madras High Court. They asked the court to order the authorities to give them better payment for their land in Kancheepuram. They wanted the price set at Rs. 50,000 per cent, along with interest and other benefits, as per the Land Acquisition Act.
Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar's land was taken before, and they got Rs. 33,075 per cent. But the Supreme Court had recently decided that Rs. 50,000 per cent was fair for similar cases. This made them ask for the same treatment.
Judge Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy looked at the case. He noticed that Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar were in a situation similar to another case (W.P.No.36795 of 2025) which had already been decided in favor of higher payment. So, he told the authorities to consider their request within four weeks, based on the Supreme Court's earlier decision.
"This writ petition is disposed of by directing the respondents to consider the petitioners’ representation dated 22.10.2025," said the court order.
The government lawyer, Mr. Abishek Murthy, argued that Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar came to the court late, not within the time limit set by the Land Acquisition Act. Even so, the court sided with them because of the Supreme Court's earlier decision.
The authorities must review Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar's request and make a decision soon. This case shows the ongoing problems with land payment and the need for courts to step in to make sure things are fair.
The decision is a big win for Rekha, Komal, and Abhay Kumar and might affect similar cases in the future.
