Here's a quick rundown of a heartbreaking case from Kancheepuram where a young woman's tragic end has led to a court battle over bail.
On September 26, 2025, a special court in Kancheepuram refused to let Sanjaykannan out on bail. He was accused in a tragic case involving the suicide of a young woman. The case was filed under laws meant to prevent unfair treatment of certain communities, and Sanjaykannan asked the court to let him out on bail.
Sanjaykannan and the woman who passed away were from the same area. They were dating, and it was said that the woman became pregnant. Things took a tragic turn when Sanjaykannan reportedly said he would only marry her if she ended the pregnancy. Heartbroken, she took her own life by hanging on September 9, 2025.
A community meeting was held on September 4, 2025, where Sanjaykannan's family agreed to arrange a marriage. However, despite this promise, the woman committed suicide just five days later. Her family claims that Sanjaykannan did not keep his promise, leading to her tragic decision.
Sanjaykannan's lawyer argued that he should be let out on bail, saying that the family had agreed to the marriage during the community meeting. However, the other side pointed out the seriousness of the charges, including the involvement of laws protecting minors, as the relationship reportedly began when the woman was underage.
Judge T.V. Thamilselvi looked at the evidence and decided that there was too much risk of Sanjaykannan running away or trying to influence witnesses. The court also noted the seriousness of the charges and the ongoing investigation, leading to the refusal of the bail request on November 11, 2025.
"The materials support the severity of the situation. There is every possibility of the petitioner to abscond and to tamper with the witnesses," noted Judge T.V. Thamilselvi.
The court ordered a temporary compensation of Rs. 1,50,000 to the deceased’s mother, recognizing the family's loss and hardship.
