The Delhi High Court has told the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take another look at the registration application of the "All Party Hills Leader Conference" as a political party in Assam. The All Party Hills Leader Conference had been waiting a long time to get approval for their party name and symbol.
The All Party Hills Leader Conference applied to the ECI on March 6, 2025, to register as a political party. They want to take part in the Assam State General Legislative Assembly Election in 2026. They submitted all the needed paperwork, including three backup names.
On March 7, 2025, the ECI confirmed they received the application. However, even after checking in regularly, the All Party Hills Leader Conference didn't get any more updates. They sent in more documents on July 25, 2025, which the ECI confirmed they got, but the registration was still not complete.
The All Party Hills Leader Conference went to the Delhi High Court, asking the ECI to approve their party name or one of the other names they suggested. They pointed out that the ECI had started accepting applications for election symbols on November 21, 2025, but their registration was still not done.
The ECI sent a letter on November 14, 2025, saying there were missing pieces in the documents they received. They mentioned that not all needed documents were submitted according to their rules.
"All needed documents, according to the rules and instructions of the ECI, have still not been submitted by the petitioner."
Judge Mini Pushkarna, who was in charge of the case, told the All Party Hills Leader Conference to turn in all missing documents within one week from December 8, 2025. The ECI then has to review and make a decision on the registration within eight weeks.
The court's decision gives a clear timeline for what the All Party Hills Leader Conference and the ECI need to do. The All Party Hills Leader Conference is eager to sort out the issues quickly so they can join the upcoming elections.
