Summary: The Bombay High Court dealt with a shocking case where a son, Amit Puri, failed to care for his 76-year-old mother, Mrs. Mohini Puri, who was hospitalized. The court found that Amit neglected his responsibilities, leaving the hospital to care for her. The court ordered the state to ensure her well-being and restricted Amit from handling her properties.
Mrs. Mohini Puri, aged 76, was admitted to Bandra Holy Family Hospital on August 24, 2025, due to severe health issues. Her son, Amit Puri, initially admitted her but later refused to pay the hospital bills or take her home, claiming medical negligence.
"A frail and ailing mother is left under the care of a hospital, neglected by an able son."
The hospital, unable to discharge Mrs. Puri due to unpaid bills amounting to Rs 16,00,000, approached the court to seek help for her care. They requested that the police and Senior Citizens Tribunal take charge of the situation.
Justice Ranjitsinha Raja Bhonsale noted the emotional neglect faced by Mrs. Puri. Despite being ready to leave the hospital, her son refused to cooperate, leaving her at risk of getting infections from the hospital.
"The son has raised baseless allegations to avoid paying the hospital bills."
The court involved the government's lawyer, Dr. Birendra Saraf, who suggested that the government could help move Mrs. Puri to another facility or her home. The court emphasized the state's responsibility to ensure her right to health.
The court directed that Mrs. Puri be moved to a government hospital if her son fails to act. It also ordered that Amit cannot deal with her properties without court permission, ensuring her assets are protected for her welfare.
"The case highlights the need for social justice and protection of senior citizens."
The court ruled that Amit Puri neglected his mother and must not manage her properties. The state is responsible for ensuring Mrs. Puri's care, and she will be moved to a government hospital if needed. This decision reinforces the importance of caring for elderly parents and protecting their rights.
