In a shocking case from Aurangabad, Hariomdas Govinddas Bainade was sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife, Kalpana, with a hammer. The court also found him guilty of trying to take his own life.
On the night of October 4, 2017, Kalpana's mother, Gendabai, received a call from her granddaughter, Netal, saying that Hariomdas had hit Kalpana with a hammer. When Gendabai rushed to the scene, she found both Kalpana and Hariomdas hurt.
"Blood was coming from Kalpana's head, and Hariomdas had tried to cut his own throat," reported Gendabai.
The police investigation, led by Officer Kailas Pawar, involved collecting a hammer and a marble cutter with blood on them from the scene. Witnesses confirmed the tense relationship between Hariomdas and Kalpana because he suspected her of cheating.
During the trial, Kalpana's daughter, Netal, did not support the prosecution's case, but the evidence was overwhelming. The court, led by Judges Nitin B. Suryawanshi and Sandipkumar C. More, found the injuries matched a violent attack.
Dr. Ganakwar, who did the postmortem, confirmed the head injuries were caused by a hard, blunt object.
Hariomdas's defense claimed he was unconscious because of medication and suggested an intruder was responsible. However, the court dismissed these claims, citing the lack of evidence for an intruder and the presence of blood-stained tools.
"The accused failed to provide a believable explanation for the injuries," the court noted.
The court upheld the conviction based on the complete chain of circumstantial evidence. Hariomdas was sentenced to life in prison for murder and two months for attempting suicide.
