Hey everyone! Here's a juicy update from the world of academia. A recent court decision has stirred up quite the conversation about admissions at Osmania University, especially regarding the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category.
So, here's what happened. Tummala Sreevani, a student with all the right qualifications, applied for a Ph.D. in Physics for the 2025-26 academic year. She had her merit in place and even had an EWS certificate. But surprise, surprise—she didn't get in! The university claimed there were no eligible EWS candidates, even though two seats were left vacant.
Tummala Sreevani wasn't having it. She filed a formal request, arguing that her exclusion was unfair and violated her rights under the Indian Constitution. She pointed out that others with lower qualifications got in, and she didn't. She even wrote a detailed letter on September 30, 2025, to the university, asking them to reconsider her case.
"I qualified the OU Ph.D. exam and also attended the interview... Even though I am in merit... I did not get admission under the EWS category."
The case was heard by Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Surepalli Nanda. Tummala Sreevani's lawyer argued that she had all the qualifications and her EWS certificate was valid. The university's lawyer didn't argue against this but suggested that the university should reconsider her application.
Justice Surepalli Nanda decided that the university must look at Tummala Sreevani's application again. They were directed to make a decision quickly and communicate it to her. The court didn't make either side pay any costs.
"The Writ Petition is disposed of, directing the 3rd respondent to consider the representation of the petitioner... and pass appropriate orders."
The university has to act fast because the admission deadline is super close. Let's see if Tummala Sreevani finally gets her deserved spot.
