On January 22, 2026, the Madras High Court made a big decision about a tragic accident that happened in Tiruppur. The court lowered the amount of money given to the family of a young student who died in a motorcycle accident.
Back on March 22, 2015, Rajavignesh, a student at K.S.R. College of Technology, was riding with his friend Naveen Raj. They were on a motorcycle on the Covai to Salem NH-47 road. Unfortunately, due to careless and reckless driving, they had an accident. Rajavignesh was seriously hurt and later died at the Avinashi Government Hospital.
Rajavignesh's parents, Mr. M. Subramani and Mrs. S. Kamalaveni, asked for ₹50,00,000 as payment for their son's death. The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal initially decided they should get ₹30,06,000.
Reliance General Insurance, the insurance company, wasn't happy with the tribunal's decision. They challenged it, saying that there wasn't enough proof of careless driving. They also thought the monthly income used to calculate the payment was too high.
Justice C.V. Karthikeyan and Justice K. Kumaresh Babu looked over the case. They decided that the monthly income should be considered as ₹15,000 instead of ₹18,000. They also made some changes to other payment categories:
Overall, the total payment was reduced to ₹23,88,000.
The court ordered that Reliance General Insurance must pay the reduced amount with 7.5% interest from the date of the original request. This decision shows how courts carefully look at all parts of a case to make sure the payment is fair.
