In a recent decision, the Madras High Court confirmed the payment for land taken in Chennai, bringing closure to a long-standing case.

Background of the Case

The case began when Tmt. Samar Poori filed an appeal against the payment given for her land in Mathur Village, Chennai. The land was taken for the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) project. Initially, the payment was set at Rs. 200 per cent, which Samar Poori disagreed with.

Initial Payment and Appeal

On December 19, 1990, the government announced the land would be taken, and by October 15, 1993, the payment was decided. Unhappy with the amount, Samar Poori asked for a change. The Sub Court in Ponneri increased the payment to Rs. 4,750 per cent on June 24, 2013. However, Samar Poori felt this still undervalued her land.

"The trial Court made a mistake in setting Rs. 4,750/- per cent as payment for the lands taken," argued her lawyer.

Court's Final Decision

The case reached the High Court, where Honourable Dr. Justice A.D. Maria Clete reviewed the appeal. The court found that earlier decisions had already settled the payment rate, and further appeals, including a Special Leave Petition to the Supreme Court, had been turned down.

"There is no room for a different view in this appeal," the judgment stated.

Summary of the Verdict

On November 25, 2025, the High Court confirmed the payment awarded by the Sub Court. The court ordered that any remaining payment be deposited within eight weeks, allowing Samar Poori to take it out as per the law. This decision marks the end of a lengthy legal battle over land payment in Chennai.
