Mihir Shah's request to be released from jail while waiting for his trial was turned down by the Bombay High Court. He was involved in a serious car accident that led to a woman's death.
On July 7, 2024, Mihir Shah was driving a white BMW very fast when he hit a scooter from behind. The scooter was being driven by Pradeep Nakhwa, and his wife, Kaveri, was riding with him. The crash was severe, and Kaveri got stuck under the car, which Mihir continued to drive for about 1.5 to 2 kilometers before stopping.
Even though there were screams and it was a serious situation, Mihir didn't stop right away. Instead, he kept driving, dragging Kaveri under the car. Pradeep tried to follow the car in a taxi but lost sight of it. He eventually reported the incident to the Worli Police Station. Later, the police found Kaveri's body on the sea-link road.
The police investigation showed that Mihir had been drinking a lot the night before the accident. CCTV footage showed the car speeding away from the scene, and witnesses confirmed the reckless driving. Mihir was found two days later and arrested.
Mihir's requests to be released from jail were rejected multiple times. His lawyer argued that Mihir didn't mean to cause harm and that he panicked. However, the court, led by Dr. Neela Gokhale, J, found the evidence against him strong. The court was worried that Mihir might try to mess with witnesses or run away.
The court decided that letting Mihir out of jail was not the right thing to do. Mihir's actions after the accident, like switching seats with his driver and calling his father to the scene, suggested he was trying to avoid taking responsibility.
While Mihir remains in custody, the court has allowed the possibility of renewing his bail application after key witnesses have testified. This case highlights the serious consequences of reckless driving and how the legal system deals with such incidents.
