In a disturbing case from Raigad, the Bombay High Court has made a decision involving the Shanti Ashram orphanage. Christian Rajendran has been sentenced to 14 years for multiple crimes, including sexual assault on minors. His brother, Joy Rajendran, has been found not guilty of all charges. Their mother, Salomi Rajendran, received a reduced sentence for not reporting the crimes.
Christian and Joy Rajendran, along with their mother Salomi, were accused of serious crimes at the Shanti Ashram orphanage in Chambharli, Raigad. Christian faced charges under various laws, including sexual assault and showing inappropriate materials to minors.
"Christian Rajendran was sentenced to 14 years for his terrible acts," stated the court records.
The case began when Advocate Manisha Tulpule, from the Child Welfare Committee in Karjat, learned about the abuse from a local teacher. The children were removed from the orphanage on April 29, 2015, and underwent medical examinations from May 6 to May 13, 2015. A police report was filed based on these findings.
The prosecution presented 21 witnesses, including the victims and medical professionals. The victims shared their traumatic experiences, and medical reports backed up these claims.
"The medical evidence confirmed the possibility of sexual assault," noted Dr. Naik, who examined the victims.
On December 5, 2025, Judge R. M. Joshi upheld the conviction of Christian Rajendran, citing strong evidence from the victims and medical reports. Joy Rajendran was found not guilty due to insufficient evidence, while Salomi Rajendran's sentence was reduced to time already served.
This case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable children and ensuring timely reporting of abuse. The court emphasized the responsibility of caregivers under the POCSO Act to report any known offenses.
"Salomi Rajendran failed in her duty to report the crimes," the judgment stated.
The verdict has sparked discussions on child protection and the legal responsibilities of those running care institutions.
In summary, Christian Rajendran was sentenced to 14 years for his crimes, Joy Rajendran was found not guilty, and Salomi Rajendran received a reduced sentence for not reporting the crimes.
